Turnaround builds momentum as fiber meets AI

01 Running thesis

A fiber bet with a new AI engine

Verizon is changing the story from price hikes to customer growth and new infrastructure revenue. The new plan is to keep more customers, sell them simple services, and monetize the underlying network in new ways.

The consumer turnaround is taking hold. In Q2 2026, Verizon added 184,000 postpaid phone customers, its best result in five years. The company launched Simplicity, a transparent $45 wireless plan, and Verizon One, a $70 converged mobility and broadband bundle. By separating device subsidies from rate plans, management expects to improve profit margins.

The biggest shift is the new AI Connect initiative. Verizon signed a deal with Google valued at over $1 billion to connect data centers using dark fiber. The company is also retrofitting central offices into data centers for edge computing. This turns legacy real estate into high margin infrastructure revenue, expected to accelerate total growth in 2027.

The bear case remains focused on the balance sheet and execution. Total debt sits at $172.5 billion, and net debt to EBITDA is 2.6x. If AI infrastructure demand normalizes or the core business falters, debt service could crowd out network spending or shareholder returns.

Jul 2026Q2 2026 earnings showed consumer postpaid phone net adds at five year highs. Verizon also announced AI Connect, a new initiative to lease fiber and edge computing space.
May 2026Q1 2026 gave the first full view with Frontier included. Broadband growth improved, but the deal also hid weakness in core Business revenue and pushed total debt to $172.5 billion.
Apr 2026Verizon added 55,000 postpaid phone customers in Q1, its first Q1 gain in 13 years. Management also raised adjusted EPS growth guidance to 5.0% to 6.0%.
Feb 2026The 2025 10-K confirmed the January 2026 Frontier and Starry acquisitions and a $25 billion buyback authorization. It also added an open ended risk around lead sheathed cable claims.
Jan 2026The new CEO put hard numbers on the turnaround plan, including $5 billion in operating expense savings and 750,000 to 1 million postpaid phone net adds in 2026.
Oct 2025New CEO Dan Schulman shifted the strategy away from relying too much on price increases. The focus moved to profitable customer growth, lower churn, and cost savings.
Oct 2025The Q3 2025 10-Q showed a 7,000 consumer postpaid phone net loss and slower fixed wireless adds. Consumer revenue still grew, but the subscriber trend stayed under pressure.
Jul 2025The Q2 2025 filing confirmed a 51,000 consumer postpaid phone net loss. Strong Consumer revenue growth and fixed wireless demand were not enough to remove concern about core wireless.
02 Business model

Renting out the network

Verizon makes money by selling access to its networks. The main products are monthly wireless phone plans, home internet, business connectivity, and related devices or services. The network costs a lot to build, but once built, Verizon tries to earn steady monthly revenue from each account.

For consumers, Verizon recently shifted away from complex subsidies toward transparent pricing. The Simplicity and Verizon One plans focus on profitable account growth, lower churn, and better value. The goal is to separate phone costs from service costs, making the monthly bill predictable.

For broadband, Verizon uses Fios fiber, fixed wireless access, and the acquired Frontier fiber footprint. The network reach is growing, allowing the company to sell bundled packages that lower customer churn.

The company is now adding a major infrastructure layer. Through AI Connect, Verizon leases unused dark fiber and retrofitted edge computing spaces to large tech companies. This creates a new revenue stream that does not rely on consumer phone upgrades or typical retail promotions.

03 Product portfolio

Phones, fiber, and AI pipes

Cash cow

Postpaid wireless

This is the core Verizon product. Customers pay monthly for phone service, and Q2 2026 showed a strong 184,000 postpaid phone net adds.

Growth engine

AI Connect

A new initiative to lease dark fiber and retrofitted central offices to hyperscalers for edge computing.

Growth engine

Fios and Frontier fiber

Fiber broadband is a main growth bet. Verizon continues to scale its fiber footprint and bundle it with wireless plans.

Growth engine

Fixed wireless access

Fixed wireless uses Verizon's wireless network to sell home or business internet in areas without direct fiber connections.

Steady

Prepaid wireless

Verizon sells lower commitment plans through brands such as Total Wireless and Visible. This helps reach price sensitive customers.

Steady

Business connectivity

Verizon sells phone lines and internet to businesses. The international wireline part is being spun into a joint venture with BT Group.

05 Risk factors

What could go wrong

Turnaround targets missed

High impact · Medium odds

Management promised $5 billion in operating expense savings and 750,000 to 1 million postpaid phone net adds for 2026. Missing these goals would hurt confidence in the new strategy.

We watchQuarterly postpaid phone net adds, churn, and operating expense progress.

Debt limits choices

High impact · Medium odds

Total debt reached $172.5 billion after the Frontier acquisition. This leaves less room for error. A cash flow slowdown could pressure network spending or shareholder returns.

We watchNet debt to EBITDA, free cash flow, and interest expense.

AI infrastructure delays

Medium impact · Medium odds

The bull case relies heavily on the new AI Connect initiative generating revenue by 2027. If retrofitting central offices proves too costly or demand shifts, growth will disappoint.

We watchNew hyperscaler deals and capital expenditure requirements for AI retrofits.

Lead cable liability grows

Medium impact · Medium odds

Verizon faces investigations and litigation tied to lead sheathed copper cables in older networks. The company says expenses cannot be reasonably estimated and could be material.

We watchNew court rulings, regulator actions, or any cost estimate from management.

Network reliability slips

Medium impact · Medium odds

A nationwide 5G outage in January 2026 lasted 10 hours. More outages would damage the premium network brand Verizon depends on to maintain its pricing power.
